CEO Position Overview

The CEO is the Chief Executive Officer of AZYP.

Founded in 1990, Arizona Youth Partnership (AZYP) is a not-for-profit prevention organization that works with youth and families in 42 rural communities across 11 of the 15 counties in Arizona. AZYP seeks to employ a root cause approach to fighting poverty that builds healthy, self-sufficient youth and families through evidence-based prevention programs and community involvement. Over the past three years, AZYP has integrated the Starting Out Right Program (formerly known as Teen Outreach Pregnancy Services) serving pregnant and parenting youth, and Help and Hope for YOUth, a collective impact initiative addressing youth mental health. 

The Board of Directors and staff are committed to maintain the organization’s mission and expansion of its work in rural, underserved communities throughout the State. Although the majority of AZYP’s funding currently comes from grant sources, the Board continues to focus on raising funds from non-grant sources such as program income and donations.

The CEO facilitates the work of the volunteer Board of Directors at monthly Executive Committee meetings, quarterly Board meetings, and standing committee activities. The CEO must be able to successfully oversee the financial, contractual, and programmatic operations of the organization’s 70 staff members while supervising six (6) direct reports on a Leadership Team that includes a Chief Financial Officer, Chief Initiatives Officer (overseeing Starting Out Right), Director of Prevention Services, Director of Homeless Youth Services, Development Specialist and may expand with business needs.

This position, for which the primary duties will be performed in Marana on the northwest side of the Tucson metro area, will work with regional offices across Arizona with the largest in Mohave and Gila Counties. Knowledge of culturally diverse, low-income, rural communities is helpful.

The CEO reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for the organization’s consistent achievement of its mission and financial objectives.

Program Development and Administration Responsibilities

  1. Facilitate and work with the Board of Directors in monthly Executive Committee meetings and quarterly full board meetings.
  2. Facilitate and implement the work of the Board of Directors in collaboration with the Board and following the by-laws.
  3. Oversees the research, planning, and evaluation of programs, services, and activities of the organization.
  4. Maintain official records and documents, and ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations.
  5. Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field including community development, prevention, and health and wellness models.
  6. Keep current on local, state, and federal funding opportunities and pursue options through federal, state, and local grant writing that are consistent with the organization’s mission, vision, and strategic plan.
  7. Maintain a balance between funding sources: Federal, State, and private. 
  8. Create a post-COVID work environment that fosters good social interactions but also provides physical distancing and ensures a desirable and productive safe work setting.

Public Relations and Marketing Responsibilities

  1. See that the Board is kept fully informed on the condition of the organization and all the important factors influencing it.
  2. Promote the work of the organization to the community including fund sources, media, elected officials, community partners, and legislators.
  3. Establish and maintain collaborations with communities and partners that address needs of at-risk youth, their families, and community coalitions.
  4. Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to achieve business objectives in the communities AZYP serves and in other geographical areas of interest to the organization.

Human Relations and Employee Development Responsibilities

  1. Be responsible for the recruitment, employment, and release of all personnel, both paid staff and volunteers.
  2. Ensure that job descriptions are developed, that regular performance evaluations are held, and that sound human resource practices are in place.
  3. See that an effective Leadership Team, with appropriate provision for succession, is in place.
  4. Encourage staff and volunteer development and education and assist program staff in relating their specialized work to the total program of the organization.
  5. Assure organizational and staff cultural competency.
  6. Ability to develop others through staff development and succession planning.
  7. Leadership and team building. Clear vision for the organization’s trajectory and ability to communicate the trajectory to the Board, and garner staff buy-in through passion and sound leadership skills.
  8. Embrace AZYP’s organizational values and encourage staff to use values as a guide for program and community work.
  9. Diverse communication strategies to meet needs of the statewide staff and communities.
  10. Trust building.
  11. Developed process for conflict management.

Fiscal and Operations Responsibilities

  1. Responsible for developing and maintaining sound financial practices. Oversee the fiscal accountability of the organization, assuring an independent outside annual audit.
  2. Work with the staff, Chief Financial Officer, and the Board in preparing a budget; see that the organization operates within budget guidelines.
  3. Ensure that adequate funds are available to permit the organization to carry out its work.
  4. Oversee and publish the annual report.
  5. Oversee contract compliance with all fund sources.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A minimum of a Master’s Degree in related field required; Ph.D. is highly desirable.  
  • Minimum of six (6) years progressively upward management experience in nonprofit, public, and/or private sector management and leadership roles, including fiscal management/accountability, contract compliance, policy development and implementation, and program development.
  • Minimum of five (5) years experience in supervision of 20 + staff with proven successful knowledge of human resource issues.
  • Minimum three (3) years experience in community mobilization.
  • Extensive proven knowledge of program design, development, implementation, and evaluation in prevention, community development, and early intervention.
  • Excellent public relations and networking skills.
  • Proven success with writing and directing grants from diversified sources.
  • Able to raise funds from non-grant sources.
  • Proven experience with starting up, maintaining, and ramping down organizations

REQUIREMENTS:           

  • Travel within the state and out of state (total travel is approximately 15 – 20% of the job)
  • Valid AZ Drivers’ License
  • Fingerprinting clearance
  • All AZYP employees are required to submit documentation demonstrating they are fully vaccinated for COVID-19 as a condition of employment unless granted a religious or disability/medical accommodation (accommodation to be submitted and approved by AZYP’s legal advisor)
  • Flexible schedule and work some weekends and evenings
  • Able to successfully pass a Background Check
  • Capable of certifying in CPR/First Aid
